Is that even how you spell that? Because I didn’t go to Arkansas for college and I didn’t grow up there.
Several weeks ago I received an e-mail from Max’s teachers asking for parent volunteers for the annual pig heart and lung dissection. My response? To immediately hit Respond and write I’M SO IN!!!
And it was worth it. I know some of you are squeamish with the blood and guts. I get that. I’m just completely fascinated by the science of it. Besides, when I took Zoology in high school, I only got to dissect a star fish and a fish. Boring. And stinky. Not fun at all.
The pig hearts and lungs? Very interesting and superiorly cool to star fish or a fish. Here’s Max blowing up the lung.

Oy. I think I prefer fish!
WAY COOL! I want to volunteer too!
As a parent, I might sign up for this activity, but I must admit it was three weeks of fetal pig dissection in 1991 that made me a vegetarian–which I still am.
Thank you so much for commenting! I was so excited to see you here!
Oh, and Denise too. LOL! Thanks. M
I can see that. I’m still a carnivore, but I can definitely see where it would turn you off.
Wow, I don’t know if I’d have volunteered. You ARE the cool mom! And I’m glad I witnessed the blowing up of the lung after dinner…but wait, I might still be thinking about it tomorrow morning. Thanks, M.
Oh yes, I love dissection. In nursing school we got to study with an entire cadaver…SO cool.
My lab partner confessed that she kept having nightmares, poor girl
When I was taking Anatomy and Physiology in the fall semester one year it was very interesting and entertaining when I dissected the Thanksgiving turkey innards for my children. They still remember that Thanksgiving for sure
I loved that class, but even more I loved microbiology. My minor is in biology, so I’d have been there with ya’ll if I coulda been.
I wish we had gotten to disect pigs : (
We only did an earthworm and a frog. Phooey.
Oh. And I am a native Arkansan. Or as my Dad demands it to be…Arkansawyer, and it is Woo Pig Sooie. Go hogs!!
Annual pig heart and lung dissection? Sadly, we have only been graced with frogs soaked in preservatives.
