For those of you not following me on Twitter (@chilihead), I lost my cell phone last week.
I looked half-heartedly in the van, the kitchen, the living room, and the play room.
I did not find it in a chair. I did not find it in my hair. And although I didn’t really care, I could not find it anywhere.
"Too bad," I said as I relayed my tale of woe to my husband. "I guess I’ll go get an iPhone now." And I was only partially joking.
Two days later, Husband found my phone pushed down between the cushions of the sofa. Well, there went the iPhone. Not that I had really entertained the idea. After all, I’m reasonable. I always buy the least expensive phone I can. No fancy bells and whistles for me. Just ask Shannon, I couldn’t even text from my phone at BlogHer this summer.
As my husband tossed me my phone and told me where he found it (a place he had suggested I look and hadn’t), he casually said, "Maybe you can donate this one after you get your iPhone today."
So I did. And I have an iPhone. And it’s black and shiny and 3G and holds my life inside. One place for my e-mail, calendars, to do lists, photos, iPod, video (who doesn’t travel with the full Dr. Horrible video?), and everything else I might need including phone numbers and addresses.
What I would like to know from you is . . .
- What iPhone applications are your must-haves?
- Why are they must-haves?
- Are you a free app, pay app, or both person?
I want to know everything. Spill.

I’m a both person. I love the one where you can check movie times, so helpful… I also use the facebook and twitter apps for mobile stuff. I have Monkeyball for those times we’re stuck somewhere and the older kids get bored.
All of the above, plus my email and calendar and internet access, are on my iPod Touch. Does everything the phone does, without the phone.
I couldn’t afford the AT&T phone plan, or I would have the phone.
I like the iPhone application that comes over and cleans your friend’s house while she takes a nap. They DO have that one, right?..
I’ve found a favorite (free!) app for the kids. Definitely Bubble Pop. It’s like blowing bubbles without the sticky mess. Yay!
My husband has an app on his iPhone which knows every song ever recorded. You open the app, it “hears” a song, and it will tell you the name of the song, the artist, the year it was released, etc.—and, of course, links to iTunes if you want to buy the song.
We try to trick it with obscure XM satellite channels, but the app knows everything.
He also has a game the kids love which involves cows jumping off cliffs onto rafts. It is hard.
Ok…I’ve already submitted my faves via @TheRoadToHome on Twitter.
Which ones are YOUR favorites?
If you find the one Shannon’s talking about, let me know!
I’m a free-app kind of guy, and being a guy, I have to say the one app that I’ve found the most happiness from has been Phone Saber, a Star Wars light saber emulator thingy, complete with the sounds. Total geek thing, but I just smile whenever I hear it.
I have Sol Free solitaire for Klondike, Facebook, Twitter, Little Chef, which is a measurements calculator for cooking (I had no idea a Tbsp was ~3 tsp), Wikipanion, Flashlight (really comes in handy – srsly), Baseball (for all the stats) and SportsTap for all the scores.
I’ve also purchased FlashMath so I can have my kids doing timed addition/sub/mult/div when we’re waiting places or on car or plane rides.
I’ve not bought in to the game craze – I don’t have the time! But there are lots that look really cool.
My “must haves”? PhoneSaber and Solitaire.
Oh, and CNN’s mobile page is one of the best – loads fast, has pics…great. Really well done. But that’s just in Safari and not a separate app.
(My sis Headless Mom sent me here to blab about this, so blame her for my geekery.
I forwarded this post to my husband, who just bought an iphone on Saturday. He will be THRILLED with all these suggestions.
I have a free phone. I love it. It’s pink. And I’m cheap.
i’d just be thrilled if my DH would let me get an iphone.
I KNEW you were gonna end up with one…I just KNEW it!
.
Congratulations on your new bebeh
Fun post! I don’t have an iPhone, but I did get an iPod Touch (the same day you got your iphone!), so I’ve been having fun exploring all the apps. I like all kinds — free/paid, games/productivity… I’m an equal opportunity app user. So far, I like:
Enigmo. I paid $2.99 and *love* this puzzle game. Definitely my favorite game app.
Also, Wurdle, Sol Free, Monkey Lab are games I’m enjoying. My husband likes the free Cube Runner.
Pandora (free) for great music.
Twitterific (free) for keeping up with Twitter.
Evernote (free) – I use the evernote Mac and web app as my place to stash notes, ideas…any kind of brain dump. The iphone app integrates seamlessly with those and I use it all the time.
Instapaper – My most expensive purchase. Let’s me save web sites to read when I’m offline. I’ve used it quite a bit.
For my kids — Preschool Adventure (my 2-year-old LOVES this app, and it allowed me a long, leisurely visit at the hospital w/ my new nephew while Logan played this app); iDoodle2 Lite (free drawing app); Dizzy Bee; PapiRiver (free)
Okay, I’ll stop now.
Holy Cow! This couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been thinking of using my birthday money to get the Touch.
I can’t afford the AT&T plan and probably not the Verizon plan for Blackberry so the Touch seems like my best option. Free apps all the way!
Oh lord what app isn’t my favorite, I to have the 3g but I told my dh that i had to have it in white LOL b/c it was cuter. Yes my reasonings are not always sane.
I have both paid and free apps, mostly free. I have 77 to date. I love Twinkle, Pandora, Im all in one, Myspace, Facebook, Wikipanion, sportacular, I could go on and on LOL
