Iowa, Land of the Casserole

in Family, Iowa, recipes

My love of Iowa is well-documented. So don’t give me any grief about giving them grief.

Iowa is the land of the casserole. They will vehemently deny it, but I have yet to visit that state without being fed several casseroles on my visit. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good casserole. Every meal, though?

They even like their chips to be casseroles. Case in point: Walking Tacos. It’s basically a bag of chips and you dump everything to make a taco into the chip bag. You have your little bag of Doritos and you dump in meat, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, etc. and eat it with a spoon right out of the bag. My husband was instantly in love; why couldn’t we just buy Fritos instead of Doritos and dump in chili? Instant Walking Frito Pie! Genius.

Also? I was informed that the Iowa version of tuna noodle casserole is to make Mac&Cheese, dump in Cream of Mushroom soup, and add tuna. Wow. Of course, this is also really easy to make as a one-person casserole: you just use the single serve microwave Mac&Cheese.

Again, WOW.

Amazing minds come up with this stuff.

HAH! My husband is from Iowa, and as far as I can tell, he would prefer ANYTHING to casseroles. And I make that fake tuna noodle thing, though just for my two year old son and myself….Marcus won’t eat it, and I am from Virginia! But that was a funny post. Midwesterners sure are different!

Not from Iowa, but I’m a big fan of the simplicity and all-inclusiveness of casseroles. They’re a key part of my menu plan.
But the walking taco thing? Never heard of that. Bet my husband would love it, though.

Amazing minds indeed…
Your family was TOTALLY into the walking tacos!

I am a walking taco addict! I love them in all of their high fat, high calorie content! MMMMMMMMMMM! I’m from Nebraska and we have our share of casseroles, too!

Walking Tacos? I live in CO and have never heard of that. It would never, ever, ever occur to me to dump meat in a sack and eat it with a spoon. I bet it’s good, though.
Do places sell them? Or is it something you make on your own, at home, to take to the CORNHOLE tournament (which is another of those midwest things that baffles me…).

When we go camping, we serve chili in single-serve Fritos bags. Cheese, sour cream and other accoutrements are available should our campers desire to garnish. YUM-OH!

As an Iowan (one of the many you know and love), I can tell you that walking tacos are pretty much a massive hit at anything that requires feeding a lot of people at once.
And I love me a good casserole, having been weaned on them in my growing up years, but my kids aren’t big fans so I don’t make them a whole lot.
I would, for you though, make my most excellent pizza casserole. It’s sooooo good.

My husband is from Iowa and the whole casserole thing is a running joke in our family. He says in Iowa you can start any recipe with a can of soup.
