Mad Braiding Skillz

I rarely buy Wild Thing clothing because my good friend Charlotte has two girls and she plies me with hand-me-downs. The past few weeks, though, I have been hard pressed not to buy something for her because the sales! They are everywhere!

Today temps dropped to a reasonable degree (Fall! Here! Yes!) and Wild Thing donned a new skirt, tee, and sweater. I had also bought a new purse/bag/backpack for her that matched because I’m savvy like that. Then she asked me to braid her hair.

Crap.

Have I ever mentioned that I dreaded having a girl for this very reason? I have no idea what to do with hair. Certainly I cannot braid hair. I’m getting better at pony tails, but I’m no expert even on that easy request. Max has the right idea with his Marine-grade buzz.

I present you with my first-ever attempt at girl hair. It’s OK to laugh.

I wonder if I should buy one of those Barbie heads and start practicing my braids. Stupid girly stuff.

I find that the reverse braid is easier to make look finished…especially for beginners. Do exactly what you did for Wild Thing’s hair except go under instead of going over every time you add hair. Does that make sense. It really looks nice and it’s easier for especially silky hair.

Braiding? Sure
French braiding? Not even.
I think your attempt looks pretty darn good.
I like the girly stuff but wasn’t prepared for my older daughter to start fighting with me about wardrobe selections already in KINDERGARTEN!!!

Looks pretty good to me =) It took me a long time to master french braiding on myself. I am still not very good on my dd. I may have to try the reverse braiding suggested by the previous commenter.

I think you did great!
I have always thought ‘what a waste’ that I can french braid, yet have boys! Although I do have neighborhood girls that will come over at 7am, with a brush, ponytail holder and a damp head! I have them trained!

Great job! I am awful at french braiding. And I have three girls!

I think you did a good job for your first time. You just need it a bit tighter. It helps if you have her hold the bits that you are not working on.

You did a wonderful job!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that has problems with the hair. I always worried if I had girls what was I going to do about the hair. I lucked out and got all boys. Easy Peasy no fuss on wardrobe or hair.

I think that looks gorgeous! But then, I’m a hair braiding dunce too.

Looks great for a first timer! It’s difficult to braid someone else’s hair in a french braid, anyway.

It’s your first time and you tried a French braid? I’d say you did pretty darn well.

12 Katie October 11, 2007 at 5:13 pm

You were fabulous!

I think you did a pretty good job. I stink with hair my own hair and my daughters hair. My mom never did mine because she stunk at it too. I think my little girl got stuck with “I can’t do my hair for anything genes.” Poor thing.

My mother is THE french braid expert. I didn’t inherit any of her talent. I can’t braid anything. Your first try shows great talent – you may give Mom a run for the French Braid Gold Medal.

Much better than I can do. I used to french braid my own hair into a one braid down the back. My arms cannot be up there for that long anymore. I be old.
My boys have never asked for braids but my younger son used to adore playing with my hair. He grew out of that. Phew.
I think we should get together with Special K Toni and get some lessons. We could have a sleepover and have us some girly girl fun! koffyeahrightkoff. :)

It is pretty good. Keep doing it and it gets easier.
I can braid my daughters in under 3 minutes now, practise makes perfect. Take your time, there is no rush, and never do it when you are in a rush.

It looks great – trust me it gets easier. The older they get and the thicker the hair the better it gets. Way better than my first attempt!

*sigh*
Never having had much hair to speak of (my mother insisted on being able to see the face I was determined to hide) I never learned what to do with someone else’s hair, especially when it came to braiding. Now I’m backed into a corner as the mother of a true girlie girl. Last year when my sister expressed profound astonishment that I had actually achieved a French braid, my daughter assured her that I’d had to look up instructions on the internet.

Firts attempt, I’d say you rock out loud! I got news for you though, the Barbie head, will not help, impossible to brush let alone braid that hair. Yes, I have a girl too, how did you guess?

20 Shelia October 13, 2007 at 2:44 pm

I used to practice my braiding on dolls, and their heads spin. Real people heads don’t. Technical problem there! I think french braids are a real challenge, no matter what. And luckily for me, my daughter likes to have her hair up in either a pony tail (like Cinderella), or in “doggy ears” (like her friend Dylan). Neither stay in very long, so little effort called for, little put forth.
You have a while before Wild Thing will really care what it looks like. She will just love it that her mommy did her hair!

Bless you. This is why God gave me 4 boys. He knew, He just knew. Little girl hair frightens me.

22 Jenny from Mommin' It Up! October 14, 2007 at 8:43 am

I have this exact problem! I am clueless with girlie hair stuff and my daughter was born with TONS of it! We need to sign up for a hair-help clinic! (Your braid was SO much better than anything I could have done though!! I need the remedial class.)

23 Ornery's Wife October 15, 2007 at 9:05 am

Your braid looks fine for such whispy hair. It really is much easier when it is damp, and the over braid, as mentioned in the first comment is nicer looking, but a bit more challenging to master. My daughter rode horses and played in-line hockey for years, so this hair style was essential for keeping her locks under the helmets. Don’t tell her it was a girly-girl style or I might be in trouble! :-)

Looks good to me! If you’re looking for a quick but fancy-looking do, just make a ponytail and then pull on the elastic to make it loose. Put two fingers underneath the ponytail between the elastic and her scalp. Reach through, grab the tail, and then thread it through. It’s essentially the “topsy tail” without the tool. It’s pretty much the only way piggies or ponies will stay in my DD1′s hair!

25 Mim October 16, 2007 at 8:44 am

If you want it to look tight, you have to be really mean and pull her hair, lots! It looks great other wise, it’s centered and the braid itself looks good.
