My Modest Girl

in Family,moms for modesty

Wild Thing and I went shopping Sunday. We were in search of matching outfits. Yes, we found them, and I’ll get to that. First, though, I want to share with you something that happened while we were trying on our clothes.

One of the things we thought we might get that matched were dresses. We found that we could not get exact dresses in our respective sizes, but we could coordinate the colors. Wild Thing tried on her bohemian dress and looked beautiful.

I tried on my bohemian dress with its spaghetti straps and criss-cross v-neck. I asked Wild Thing what she thought. She smiled up at me sweetly and told me I looked beautiful, but that I may want to sew the low neckline. "Like this," she said and pulled the two pieces together so they were more appropriate.

Let me just say that this dress was not inappropriate for an adult. For a high schooler? Probably, but I know I’ll be seeing them wearing this dress. For a college co-ed? Maybe, but probably not. In fact I know some co-eds that would look adorable in this dress (Katie W., if you’re reading this, get thee to Old Navy). The most inappropriate part about me trying it on was that I’ve birthed two babies and let’s just say things aren’t as, um, perky as they used to be. However, it’s also not the kind of dress you will ever see my wearing. I’m just not comfortable having that much of my me showing. Wild Thing has picked up on that.

So moms? Keep fighting the good fight. Our children are watching what we do.

Oh, and yes, we did find something to fit the mommy-let’s-dress-alike bill: camo pants, brown t-shirts, and pink crocs. It’s much more in line with my everyday wear.

Where are you in that picture? The camou makes it so difficult to distinguish, you blend in so well.

Hey, another question for you. I noticed on BB101 you have the html text quoted in your instructions. When I’ve posted about the html I can’t for the life of me figure out how to show the text–it just translates into the literal html. How did you do that?

Awww, that’s so cute! And you’re right — they’re watching every move we make. We don’t find out til later just how much.

I shopped in Juniors until I had Sean. After that some of my parts shifted and then I had to admit that I looked very sad in that cute cheap little Bohemian number. And I cried just a little.

Awww…too cute!

Very cute! Your choice is much more practical and comfortable than the cute little Bohemian number would have been anyway. And if you ever need to hide you can run to the yard and stand by a tree, but the pink crocs might give you away. :-)
Thanks for the encouragement on raising modest daughters. Mine is only 7 months right now, but it won’t be long until she is noticing everything i do.

My daughter just did the same thing to me! I was going out with my husband and was wearing a camisole under a v-neck sweater. I crouched down to fix something on her shirt and she grabbed the cami and tried to yank it up. Didn’t say a word. Just yanked.
I told her that it was okay because I was going on a date with her daddy.
Hooray for modest girls!

You guys look awesome!
BTW, Mr. Green3 brought home Guitar Hero II from a neighbor’s house the other night. Now I totally understand your words of wisdom!

13 Randi March 5, 2007 at 8:48 am

This is just cute!
All of my girls are modest too. Believe me, you will appreciate this when she becomes a teen. I can’t BELIEVE what some girls will wear–too sad, really!

That’s cute! My sister in law and her girl wear pink camo.
And your b00bs look totally fine. At least you still have somethin’. My kids sucked the best part of me away. *sigh*

Cute picture, and awesome matching outfits.

18 Heth March 5, 2007 at 11:40 am

Look at you two! Love it! I love that she did that Chili. You are right, our kids are watching.

19 Shalee March 5, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Our kids pay close attention to not only what we say, but also what we do… This was an awesome and encouraging reminder, Chili.
And you two look like sisters… Love it!

20 Oh, The Joys March 5, 2007 at 2:01 pm

That’s WAY better than the spagetti strap dress, I am certain!!

21 peach March 5, 2007 at 2:40 pm

Cute, cute!! We love those pink Crocs at our house, too. BTW, my girls think those dresses at Old Navy make ladies look pregnant. Unless that’s your goal, I’d steer clear of them anyway. You made a fine choice, friend!

I can’t wait until my daughter is old enough for me to pick out some matching outfits. I guess I could do that already….I wonder how I’d look in onesies and pink sleepers.
I am frightened about the fashions out there for girls today. I’m sad to see so many little ones wearing immodest clothes. How inspiring that your daughter is following your good example.

you guys look GREAT!

24 Chase March 6, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Way too cute, girls!! I love it!
And, by the way, when did I miss the blog design changeover!? It looks AWESOME! :)

25 sara - The Estrogen Files March 6, 2007 at 11:02 pm

This looks GREAT! I can tell you changed to Typepad, but just shunting me over here like this from Google reader is great.
Good for you and your daughter on the modesty. Doing something right!

26 Peculiar April 24, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Amen to this post sister! I am mindful of what I wear for several reasons-respecting my husband, not being a tempter in public, respecting my sons, and setting a good example for my daughters. Now, I’m not frumpy or old-fashioned (except the cool vintage outfits I wear), but I am careful, and I’ve learned you can be “cute” and cautious at the same time and pull them off quite well and satisfactorily!!
