Katrina at Callapidder Days is hosting a Fall Into Reading Challenge. I’m so excited! I recently quit the book club I’ve been a part of for eight years. I thought about this decision for over a year before I finally quit. We just weren’t focused on books any more and I was disappointed with the discussion. Unfortunately we couldn’t always get the focus back on books and it was more of a two- or three-hour social time than book discussion. The good thing about book club, though, was that I read many books I may not have otherwise picked up. Now that I no longer have my book club to determine what I read, I get to read what I want, when I want! That means I’m all over the Fall Into Reading Challenge. Care to join us? Put your list together and head on over to Callapidder Days.
My list (in no particular order):
- The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo (reading to the kiddos)
- Jewel by Bret Lott (reading with Shannon)
- City of God by E.L. Doctorow
- The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich
- The Geographer’s Library by Jon Fasman
- My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult
- We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates
- The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
- The Ruins by Scott Smith
- Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow
For me, that is an incredibly ambitious list. That list works out to about three books per month. Of course, I also have six pages of a Word document filled with other books I’d like to read too… For some reason that made me think of this movie quote:
Tyrone, you know how I love watching you work, but I’ve got my country’s 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it. I’m swamped.
What’s on your list?

The Tale of Desperaux is fantastic. I read it to my daughter on a trip last year. Really excellent.
I’ll need to think about my reading list. I just finished Lovely Bones during this past vacation, as well as the Hurried Woman Syndrome. Both were well worth the read.
But for me, “books” only seem to happen on vacation, so I’m very selective.
You’ve gotten me thinking, though, and that’s good. I don’t know much about the other titles on your list. I’ll need to do some research.
Great list. We, too, read Desperaux as a family and enjoyed it. And My Sister’s Keeper is on my “back-up pile,” just in case I need more to read! And your quote at the end – Love. It. It’s been a while since I watched that movie; I may have to dig it out.
WOW…how did you read books when you had toddlers at home? I wish I could find time to read (sigh).
Great quote. I had to laugh.
I don’t think I’ve read any of those books, although I’ve heard good things about Picoult.
That was a Princess Bride quote if I ever read one!
Loved “My Sister’s Keeper”. It’s an owner as far as I’m concered. “We Were The Mulvaneys” is a great book, but a little tough to digest. I did ponder it for a couple of weeks, so it makes a great read.
My daughter wants to read “Tale of Desperaux” together. She read it and now wants me to enjoy it with her. I love passing on this love for reading! Right now we are in “Little Women” and “Wind and the Willow”. Love it.
Might I also suggest “Time Traveler’s Wife”? It is probably the best book I’ve ever read, and you know I read a lot!
We are huge Kate DiCamillo fans at our house too. I love the reading challenges and have been finding myself reading so much more since seeing this on your site. Thanks for giving us your book lists, it gives me ideas to add to my own growing list.
Princess Bride!! What a great movie! Gotta love that Prince Humperdink! LOL
I second Shalee’s comment about The Time Traveler’s Wife. Awesome book. Also, if you haven’t read it, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is amazing.
Wish I was organzied enough to have a reading list. I usually just pick up whatever is handy. Which means I read a LOT of “beach books” and not much good literature at all.
Oh, if you have a chance to stop by my blog today, please do. You are featured in today’s post.
Great selection of books, I’m getting such great ideas from all these TBR lists
My Fall Reading List is up too! I had more time to read this summer, and I enjoyed it so much that I am looking forward to reprioritizing it. To heck with housework!
City of God, ok, gotta add that to my list! Looks like some really good reads here!
We use that same quote, in a slightly shortened form, but it still brings a smile.
The Tale of Despereaux is a ton of fun! It will make a great read-aloud.
Oh, fun list – I think we have the same taste in books. I think I’m going to post mine tomorrow…
I think I’ll have to read something by Picoult sometime soon too; I might be the only person that hasn’t read anything by her. And I always wanted to see Ragtime in New York & never did so guess it should go onto my list one day too!
Good quote, great movie!
Oh, I’ve been meaning to read Jewel and We were the Mulvaney’s too!!!! I have got to stop buying more books until I read what I have already got! have fun reading your list, it sounds interesting.
Do me a favor if you would please, let me know about how you like the book Jewel? It looks interesting but I am hesitant.
Okay, off to check out the others you have listed!
The Tale of Despereaux is a fantastic book! Hope you all enjoy it! Your other books look great as well, thanks for a few suggestions!
P.S. I am reading the original Princess Bride. If you are a fan, you should check it out, it is FUNNY!!!

I just finished My Sister’s Keeper…I really enjoyed it! I see too that several people have suggested The Time Traveller’s Wife..I’m reading it right now and am finding it hard to put down! Thanks for sharing you list! Mine’s up!
I LOVED The Tale of Despereaux!!! I also have her other book The Tiger Rising on my list at school, but not on my Fall list. I’d also love to read My Sister’s Keeper.
Great list. Happy Reading!!
Have fun reading – I always do! And if you are ever in the mood to try out an on-line book club, then just drop by my blog.
My first editor was a Mulvaney. She was only a few years older than I and we had a great time together. Oddly enough, she spoke fluent French, as her mom was from France.
Loved Jewel. Hated Ragtime (what I read of it). Let us know what you think after you read them.
